(from Latin deprimo - "to crush", "to suppress") is a type of affective or

mood disorders. It is characterised by the "depressive triad":

- A decrease in mood and loss of the ability to experience joy (anhedonia);

- Thought disorders (negative judgements, inadequately pessimistic view of events);

- Motor retardation.

HOW DEPRESSION MANIFESTS ITSELF:

- Motivation: apathy, loss of energy and interest in all or almost all activities,

things seem meaningless, hopeless;

- Emotional domain: depressed mood, loss of pleasure and positive emotions, emptiness, anger or resentment, anxiety, shame, guilt;

- Cognitive domain: slowed mental processes, poor concentration, negative beliefs about self, the world and the future;

- Behaviour: decreased activity, social isolation;

- Physiology: sleep disturbance (insomnia/hypersomnia), changes in appetite, weight loss or gain, hormonal changes, etc.

Therapy for depression:

The good news is that effective treatment for depression is possible. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a scientifically validated method that is recommended as the first choice therapy for depression.

The basic principles of CBT include becoming aware of and changing negative thoughts, becoming aware of possible distortions in thinking, making connections between thoughts, emotions and behaviour, and developing new adaptive coping strategies.
