In obsessive-compulsive disorder, a person experiences intrusive thoughts and/or actions that are distressing and can be time-consuming. People are often ashamed and afraid to seek help.

Obsessions may include fear of contamination, worries about harm, and a desire to put things "in their proper place."

Compulsive behaviours may include constant hand washing, checking and reassuring acquaintances. Treatment with cognitive behavioural therapy can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
