Panic attacks

Panic attacks (or panic disorder) are recurrent episodes of intense anxiety that can occur without warning. They usually begin suddenly and peak within minutes, causing physical symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, sweating, trembling, dizziness, a feeling of suffocation, or unexplained chest pain or discomfort.

Panic attacks can be triggered by a variety of factors, including high stress levels, traumatic events, genetic predisposition, and imbalances of chemicals in the brain. People who suffer from panic attacks often fear recurring attacks and avoid situations or places they associate with previous anxiety episodes.

Treatment for panic attacks may include psychotherapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and/or prescription of anti-anxiolytics or antidepressants. Lifestyle changes may also be helpful, including avoiding caffeine and nicotine, engaging in regular physical activity, practising relaxation techniques and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

If you or someone you love is experiencing symptoms of panic attacks, it is important to seek medical attention to diagnose and treat the condition.
